Modular Assessment Syllabus

The Ministry of Education and Sports is spearheading modularization of assessment as part of the implementation of the Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) policy, 2019 reforms.

This Modular Assessment Syllabus (MAS) has been derived from the NCDC curriculum of National Certificate in Building Construction (2016) which is currently being taught and assessed for trainees.

The syllabus looked at related content in the curriculum and realigned it into nine (9) modules of; Bricklaying, Concreting, Steel bending and fixing, Roof construction, Wall finishes, Tiling, Painting, Real Life project and Industrial training, emphasizing skills acquisition for the workforce to stimulate service delivery and infrastructural development both in private and public sectors.

Six (6) other support modules have been identified and included which have to be done by trainees who wish to pursue further education. The support modules include; Technician Mathematics, Communication Skills, Computer Applications, Kiswahili, Computer Aided Building Drawing and Entrepreneurship Skills.

The modules are flexible and allow candidates interested in academic progression to join at any time while participating in productive activities for community transformation.

Programme Overview

The syllabus for the National Certificate in Building Construction has been divided into core modules and support modules. The core modules are flexible to allow free entry and exit of learners into the world of work after attaining employable skills.

Each core module is independent but emphasizes competences. The trainee can choose which module to begin with, depending on available resources and time to complete the training.

Upon completion of a core module, the trainee receives a certificate of competence for that module. A full National Certificate is awarded to those who successfully complete all modules.

Modularization of Assessment

Modular assessment aims to group construction skills and competencies into occupational packages. Completion of each package leads to a competence certificate, allowing trainees to seek employment or pursue more training as needed.

This structure helps trainees document their learning, supports re-entry into training at a later stage, and facilitates recognition of prior learning for experienced individuals joining the program.

The modular system also integrates essential cross-cutting skills through real work processes, ensuring graduates are holistically prepared for industry expectations.

Key Practical Modules Covered

  • Masonry and bricklaying techniques
  • Concrete work and formwork construction
  • Roof construction and installation
